Ribbon Fairy Selection Tutorial

Please read my terms before you start my tutorial
The Ribbon Fairy is my own idle time creation, no inspiration from "any-ware" here ;o)
This Tutorial sure is lengthy.. so make sure you got some time, patience, and maybe a drink and snack handy :o)
By doing this tutorial I assume you have good knowledge about layers and selections in PSP

You will need:
* PSP
* MY SELECTION FILES you can download the zipped file here
Save and extract these to your Selection folder in PSP
If you haven't got one, you have to create one

Ready?.. lets get started...
1. Open new file 300 x 400 transparent
2. Selections/Load from Disk/lf-wing1.sel
First fill with #583821 and go to Selections/Modify/Contract/1
then fill this selection with white This will give definition line around the fairy I repeat this with all the selections in this tutorial!
Go to Selections/Float
and Effects/3D Effects/Cutout with V=1/H=4/Opacity=33/blur=32.5/colour=#808080
and add noise.. Effects/Noise/8% uniform, now disselect
3. Same layer, load lf-wing2.sel
and apply all as before, her wings should look like this now

4. New raster layer, load lf-hair1.sel
Fill with #583821 and go to Selections/Modify/Contract/1
fill with red and apply noise as before, disselect
5. New raster layer, load from disk/lf-leg1.sel
again fill with #583821, selections/modify/contract by 1
fill with #E4D4BE and selections/float
Effects/3d Effects/cutout with
V=4/H=-4/Opacity=71/blur=20/colour=#E7B15B
6. In your layer palette right click the leg layer and duplicate
Go to Image/Mirror and move that leg right and up a bit
As its on its own layer you will be able to adjust it later
7. New layer load from disk/lf-neck.sel
Fill, contract, fill and apply cutout same as in point 5
8. Same layer, load from disk/lf-head.sel
Fill, contract, fill and apply cutout same as in point 5
9. Same layer, load from disk/lf-arm1.sel
again apply all the same as in point 5
10. Same layer, load from disk/lf-arm2.sel
Fill, contract, fill and apply cutout same as in point 5
This is what we have so far:

11. New layer, load from disk/lf-arm3.sel
Apply all the same as in 5.
You'll notice there is a line that shouldn't be there
so with your take the eraser tool and wipe it out
Just the bit in the green circle below

12. Make the layer with the neck and head (layer 4) active
and load from disk/lf-dress.sel
fill with #583821, contract by 1 and fill with #E0C95F
add noise, 10% uniform
Selections/Float and apply cutout with
V=2/H=2/Opacity=56/blur=28.8/colour=#C23B12
I have decorated the dress with some spots
using the paintbrush on size7 setting You could use flowers, stars.. anything you want :o)
13. New layer, load from disk/lf-sleeve-ruffles.sel
fill with #583821, contract by 1 and fill with red
Add noise 10% and here I decorated it with yellow spots (brush size 1)
Disselect
14. New layer, load from disk/lf-waist-ruffle.sel
Fill, contract and decorate same as step 13.
15. Now we are going to make the bottom dress ruffle
Make sure you are on the dress layer (mine is layer 6)
Change the foreground colour to #583821 and background to the red
Preset shapes tool and draw a small circle.. see pic:

In layer palette, right click on the vector layer with the circle
and convert layer to raster layer
Layers/Arrange/Move Down, so it is UNDER the dress layer
Move the circle to the left edge of the dress, about half way hanging down
Edit/Copy and paste this circle as new selection, place next to the first
Repeat this step until the whole bottom dress is covered
With the paintbrush I have placed small yellow dots all over the ruffle
16. Lets give this poor Fae a Face :o) You can get mine here
Copy/paste as new layer on the fairy, make sure its at the top If you want to make your own, be sure to use a new layer
17. New raster layer, load lf-hair2.sel
Fill with #583821 and go to Selections/Modify/Contract/1
fill with same red as in step4 and apply noise 10% uniform
18. I have placed a little flower in her hair
You can get mine here
I also placed one on the waist ruffle
This is what we have so far:

Stockings:
You can make the stockings on a new layer, just above the leg layers
I am going to use a new file as I can explain it better that way
19. Open new file 300 x 400 transparent
20. Selections/Load from Disk/lf-leg1.sel
First fill with #583821 and go to Selections/Modify/Contract/1
then fill this selection with same red as the ruffles
and add noise.. Effects/Noise/10% uniform, now disselect
21. With your eraser tool, erase the top 1/3 of the stocking
Here is my sample

22. Stay on the same layer, take your paintbrush
and in the tool options, select size 5, round
I am using colour #583821
Now set the brush size to 3, round
and with a yellow colour (#E9DF65) place little dots in the brown dots

23. With your paintbrush size 1, round and same yellow colour
place little dots all over the rest of the stocking
24. This is your stocking done, if you have made it on a new file like me
Copy this stocking layer and paste as new layer on the fairy
Making sure this layer is above the leg layers, and move exactly over the left leg
Now duplicate this stocking layer
Image/Mirror and move exactly over the right leg
it should look something like this:

Please remember to save
When you are happy with it.. Layers/Merge/Merge Visable
The fairy is done, lets finish off with the ribbons :o)
25. This should be made on a new file, for the selections to fit
So open a new file, 333 x 181
26. Selections/Load from Disk/lf-rib1.sel
First fill with #583821 and go to Selections/Modify/Contract/1
then fill this selection with #F3790D
and add noise.. Effects/Noise/10% uniform, now disselect
27. Same layer, load from disk/lf-rib2.sel
Fill with #583821 and go to Selections/Modify/Contract/1
then fill this selection with #E91111
and add noise.. Effects/Noise/10% uniform, disselect
28. Same layer, load from disk/lf-rib3.sel
Fill with #583821 and go to Selections/Modify/Contract/1
then fill this selection with white (#ffffff)
and add noise.. Effects/Noise/10% uniform, disselect
29. Same layer, load from disk/lf-stick.sel
Fill with #583821 and disselect
Open up the little flower again and copy and paste as new selection
Place this flower on the end of her ribbon stick

You should just have one layer, if not.. Merge the layers visable and Copy
30. Make your fairy active, and as the canvas is not big enough to add the ribbons
We have to increase the canvas size.. Go toImage/Canvas Size
Type in width 400 and height 500 to give us plenty of space to work with
Paste the Ribbons as a new layer on the fairy graphic
and move the layer to the bottom
You notice the ribbons being the wrong way around.. sorry 'bout that *G*
Go to Image/Mirror and move it so the hand is holding the stick
When all are in the right position, Merge layers Visable..
WHO-HOO.. we're all done :o)
Your fairy is all ready to be used, here is a sigtag I made with her..

I hope you have enjoyed this tutorial, please don't hesitate to mail me if you have any problems
